Playlist for the Week of 6/23/14: Ingrid Michaelson is the Interview Guest and comedian Kurt Braunohler plays guest DJ.

Did you hear that Alt-J have a new single? That’d be big enough news, but the fact that they sample Miley Cyrus and totally make it work is what really makes this outstanding news. Add Dan Boekner’s new band, Au Revoir Simone covering Mazzy Star, and the return of The Vaselines and you’d be hard pressed to find a better way to spend an hour.

But IF that’s not enough, we’ll up the ante with some hang time with Ingrid Michaelson, who gives us the scoop on her record, and Kurt Braunohler, who tries his hand at being a DJ.

Playlist for the Week of 6/9/14: Gary Clark Jr. is the Interview Guest and Henry Rollins plays guest DJ.

Gary Clark Jr.

I know I make a big deal every week about how good the show is, but there’s something about this week’s lineup. Sometimes, it all lines up where every song has that great, something special. My Brightest Diamond easily has my favorite song this week, but let me also direct your attention to Avi Buffalo, Bishop Allen, and Jenny Lewis. It’s been years since any of those artists had a record out, and all three sound just as good as ever.  Tennis pulls out what is possibly their best song yet, and Neko Case & Kelly Hogan sing us a song about the future.

We’ve also got guitar-god, Gary Clark Jr. hanging out as well as the legendary Henry Rollins who plays guest DJ with a Dinosaur Jr. track.

Dig in!

John Cale

What word can we use to describe how big this week’s show is? I mean, for starters, John Cale is on the show. The dude co-founded The Velvet Underground, produced Patti Smith’s Horses, and just schooled me on hip hop (while making fun of Justin Bieber!). That alone would be enough, but no, we also have Reggie Watts giving some one on one time with Sean Cannon. Add that to new tracks from Bob Mould, The Roots, Paul Weller, Veruca Salt, and Echo & The Bunnymen and you have the perfect way to spend an hour.
